Yet another War Blog

March 29, 2003

I’ve started a War Blog, Daily News Brief. After the war (hopefully soon), I plan on developing the site into something else. For now, it’s a way for me to stay informed about the war, and maybe help a few other people do the same. Plus, it will allow me to keep this site more focused on “web” and “tech”, as I originally intended.

PC Pranks

March 29, 2003

With April Fool’s day just around the corner, I came across a listing of a few harmless PC pranks over at PC World. My co-workers will never know what hit them.

COPYPROOF CDs Are Coming

March 28, 2003

Copyproof CDs may be coming to market in bulk this year, according to CNET. I’m guessing this will just cause a further decrease in CD sales, and will be quickly overcome by motivated hackers. Imagine spending $400 on an iPod, and not being able to copy your brand new CD to it.

Spring Is In The Air

March 26, 2003

It was nice enough today to blog outside. Unfortunately, for some dumb reason I sold my laptop last fall. Doh! I took the kids for a walk, instead.

A new laptop is a priority, just not a top priority. Meanwhile, a WiFi card for my Dell Axim PDA might be a good alternative.

Human Shields Get Wake-Up Call

March 26, 2003

An interesting story about so-called “human shields”, a few of whom are returning from Iraq with a new perspective on the war.

Quote:

“I was a naive fool to be a human shield for Saddam”

Free Tax Software

March 26, 2003

This was supposed to be posted as last week’s freebie Friday, but I forgot.

This is for those of you who haven’t filed your 2002 tax return yet. The free version of 2nd Story Software’s Tax Act tax preparation software will get the job done for the vast majority of people.

I’ve used free Tax Act for the last 3 years.

Note: the software is free, but filing electronically costs around $10, and modules allowing the preparation of state returns cost extra. If you want to file electronically and/or need a state module, look at some of their inexpensive bundles.

They Don’t Build GPS Jammers Like They Used To

March 25, 2003

Those Russian GPS jammers have all been destroyed by coalition air strikes. One was even destroyed by a GPS-guided weapon. If I were Saddam, I would be on the phone with Vladimir trying to get my money back. Is the phone still working, Saddam?

And I’m very glad these guys are on our side.

Al Jazeera Under Attack

March 25, 2003

Al Jazeera’s new english language website (see previous post) is undergoing a hack attack, according to the Washington Post. That explains why I haven’t been able to see the site yet.

The web site posted graphic photos of U.S. soldiers killed (perhaps executed) by Iraqi forces.

Give a Little

March 25, 2003

Now would not be a terrible time to consider giving to the American Red Cross or International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. You can donate online with a credit card.

I’m sure a blood donation would be appreciated, as well. You can’t do that online, but you can set up an appointment.

Al Jazeera in English

March 25, 2003

Al Jazeera’s english language website is now up and running, according to this WSJ story. I couldn’t get there, though. I’m guessing traffic is pretty high. The URL is english.aljazeera.net.
